Grant High School 1. Introductions Present at the meeting were Nicholas Budge, Rosemarie Etemad-Green, Kathy Pape, Hector Perez, Karen Samson, Lonny Doi, Julie Hauser, Zachary Gage, Susan Shepperd, Filomena Tomasella-Lyles, Karen Cathcart, Molly Shibley, Paul Morris, Lecia Schall, and Deborah Zitrin. 2. Approve November’s Minutes November’s minutes were approved. Rosemarie clarified that the trip account was negative because deposits for trip expenses, which exceeded student payments at the time, had been made. 3. Director’s report - Mr. Budge Mr. Budge was impressed by the individuals and groups performing at the Winter Concert, and is looking forward to continued growth in excellence. Unfortunately, we had recording difficulties, and may not be able to produce a CD. The Sweet Sound of Jazz was also a wonderful event. Thanks to Wind Ensemble students and all the volunteers who graciously assisted. Grant’s Solo Ensemble Recital will be on 2/6. Jazz Ensemble will play on 2/7 at 8th grade information night. PIL Solo Ensemble competition festival will be on 2/24. Grant is hosting! Student volunteers are busy planning this major event. We recently had an exciting opportunity. We were approached by an ad agency that wanted 10 students to pose with Sousaphones for an ad. We were paid $2,000. 4. Band Council Liaison’s report - Zachary Gage Students thought the Winter Concert went well. Sweet Sound of Jazz was also a success, but students weren’t used to playing for such a long time. Band Shares will be going up on a wall in the band room. Candy bar sales are brisk. 5. Treasurer’s report - Rosemarie Etemad-Green The Booster account has $1,431.67 as of Fri. 1/12. The deposit box is working well but not all students are turning in receipts. The process is that students make payments to Katie in the student store, and then put their receipt or a copy of it in the wooden box in the band room. Rosemarie then credits the student’s account. Rosemarie is working closely with Katie to ensure that all funds are properly accounted for. 6. Winter Concert report - Susan Shepperd Winter Concert was a great success! The musicians played well, and the Star Wars characters were a super touch. Everyone agreed the band/choir number at the end was a wonderful idea. 7. Sweet Sound of Jazz report - Rosemarie Etemad-Green This fun event was well-attended and enjoyed by all. There was good volunteer response. We had over 60 desserts. We invested in vases, centerpieces, tablecloths, napkins and cups, which will be very helpful in the future. 8. Fundraiser report - Susan Shepperd, Mr. Budge, Rosemarie Etemad-Green -Winter Program Production -Molly Shibley We raised over $1,000 in ad sales. There were also a lot of personal ads. We used the district print shop, which helped keep costs down. -Donation Letter - We are having a great response! To date, we have received 78 donations, for a total of $7,378!!! Thank you notes, with space for a personal message, are in the works. -Band Shares - we’re having really good response. So far, we’ve sold $855. -Grant application to the GHS Booster Association - we gave a presentation and asked for $2,500. -Quilt Raffle - raffle tickets are selling well. We’ll continue to sell at events. -CD Sales - We’ve netted $141.50 so far. -Sweet Sound of Jazz This is a lovely event, and draws lots of non-Grant families. Discussion ideas: get the date early; have kids play in combos, duets, as soloists; try to set up a regular annual date?; provide our own sound system?; set up a stand with the name and composer of the piece being played; sell tickets rather than asking for donations? 9. Trip report - Susan Shepperd/Mr. Budge Plans are really coming together for the trip to LA to perform at the Heritage Festival. Dates are 3/8 - 3/10. We’ve got 50 students going. All will need to have a medical form and code of conduct agreement turned in. See the website for all the news, or come to the Trip committee meeting scheduled for 7pm, Monday, January 29 at Susan Shepperd’s house. 10. New business -Jazz Celebration, 7pm Thursday, January 25 at GHS Portland Jazz Orchestra will play. -Website management change. Paul Morris has graciously purchased the needed software, and will be taking over website management shortly. Thank you, Paul! -Pep Band treats and drinks - Please support Pep Band and keep these coming! The kids really appreciate it! Treats and drinks can be turned in to the big Rubbermaid container in the band room. We especially need water. Thanks! -Chaperones needed for Willamette Jazz Festival, Saturday, February 10. -Forms available online for PIL Solo/Ensemble Contest. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
