Grant Band Boosters
1. Present and Introductions – Filomena Tomasella-Lyles, Kaia Range, Ben Doi, Rosemarie Etemad-Green, Nicholas Budge, Ralph Erwin, Deborah Zitrin, Lonny Doi, Steve Singleton 2. Director’s Report – Mr. Budge The Band Program now has about 145 total student participants. Some students participate in more than one group; the total number of students is about 110. Concert Band is up to about 40 students. Schedule Conflicts – there have been a number of these, primarily due to the fact that there are many courses that are offered only once each day. Nick feels the administration has worked closely with him to avoid or solve these conflicts. Pep Band – Mr. Budge has been able to reduce the amount of class time spend on Pep Band, primarily due to all the work done in Band Camp. The next game is Fri. at 4:00 at Grant. Call time is after school. New Uniforms – we will probably have these for the 1st concert. Wind Ensemble boys have chosen to wear black vests with their tuxes. The girls ordered some dress samples but were not satisfied with the quality and will be returning them and ordering from another vendor. Students who are in Jazz Ensemble and another group will be asked to change, so that they are in the proper uniform for each group. Drum Line – is an all-volunteer group, which is open to all band members. Practice times are Tues. at 3:15 and Thurs. from 8:05-9:20. Back to School Night – is 10/5. Jazz Ensemble will play. Nick will try to arrange for them to play during, not before, the program. Concert schedule will change due to many conflicts. Specifics tba. (added later: Fall Concert will be Wednesday, Oct. 25, 6pm call, 6:30 curtain) Grant in the Community – Nick has been in contact with middle school directors to arrange opportunities to expose their band students to Grant’s program. Jazz combo will be playing at an assisted living center. We will try to set up a time to play in Zoo Lights. Band Council elected officers. They are posted on the website. Two Band Council representatives attended the meeting, Ben Doi and Kaia Range. 3. Approval of minutes Minutes of the 8/16/06 meeting were approved. 4. Change of Meeting Dates for the year – Susan Shepperd Meeting dates for this year are: Tues. 10/17, Tues. 11/28, Tues, 1/16, Tues. 2/20, Tues. 3/20, Tues. 4/17 and Tues. 5/15. 5. Treasurer’s report – Rosemarie Etemad-Green Prior to the Band BBQ we had a balance of $2,032.21. We spent $1,042.09 on the BBQ. We will have a wooden box with a combination lock installed in the Band Room for student receipts. Students will pay Katie at the student store and put their receipt in the box. Rosemarie will do the bookkeeping. 6. Band Camp and BBQ report – Mr. Budge and Susan Shepperd Band Camp and the BBQ were a huge success. Lots of people contributed, and their efforts paid off. Thank you!! Band Council did a great job preparing the music. What an asset to the program! Nick is planning on making practice shorter next year. The kids liked the prizes (eg, metronome, tote bag, music folders). We overbought food, especially meat, fruit, and veggies. Meat was passed on to Bosters. Susan is keeping a record of what we used for next year. We fed at least 210 people. There are 110 students in the program; 68 registered. The band room was full. Use the auditorium next year? Next year – we’ll try to have someone in charge of food, someone welcoming new families. Kaia suggested that the kids have an opportunity for section and band bonding. 7 . Instrument Locker report – Deborah Zitrin Lonnie questioned whether particle board is durable enough for our needs. Deborah has arranged for representatives of Lemons Millwork and Kriegsco Manufacturing to contact Nick to set up appointments to view our space. 8. Pep Band Support – Cathi Walker We have enough snacks for this week. Cathi is asking that people bring healthy snacks (fruits and veggies) and salty snacks for the 9/29 game. These will be put on the bus to Lincoln. Please pack everything in sealed containers. 9. Trip report – Mr. Budge and Susan Shepperd We have a new itinerary. Trip dates are 3/8-3/10 (Thurs.-Sat.) The change is due to many conflicts, and the fact that airfare to return on Sat. is much less. Roundtrip fare is $239. We need to make reservations by 10/20. Susan is preparing a Statement of Commitment, which is required by the travel agent. A deposit might be necessary at this time. The estimated base cost of the trip is $570 per person. $100 of this will be paid from Band Fees and the Band Booster account, bringing the total per student to $470.00. The cost of the trip incudes: Round-trip airfare to LAX Ground transportation in LA Two nights accommodations in a first class hotel. Performance at the Anaheim Heritage Festival, with mini-clinic and adjudication University clinic and tour (probably USC) 1 day at Disneyland-Park Hopper Ticket 2 breakfasts Evening Talent show/party at the hotel Travel insurance We will attempt to raise additional funds in various ways, and this will affect the final cost per person. If you are interested in fundraising, email Susan Shepperd at skshepperd@comcast.net. We need 1 chaperone for every 5 students; chaperones pay their own way, and are much appreciated. 10. Booster Auction donation We need someone to place our bid for jazz ensemble. A collection will take place at the next Booster meeting. Kelley Wong is in charge of the silent auction. We will ask for money donations to purchase event tickets, music CDs, and the like. Due to lots of interest, sandwich boards may be decided by lottery this year. Nick is working with Auction organizers to arrange for groups to play. 11. New Business Thank you Filomena for agreeing to put all of our new contact information into the database. 12. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:15pm Next meeting will be Tues., Oct. 17 at 7 pm in the GHS Band Room. | ||||
